All those who have been keeping up with the House of Cards will agree that it is an exceptional political thriller that has through Frank Underwood given us a dreadful reality check on just how dirty politics can really get.
Watching the terrifyingly conniving things that Frank does in his pursuit of power can sometimes creep the bejeezus out of you especially when you hear that the show may have been inspired by real-life politicians. Well, we have no clue as to what’s true and what’s not…but in today’s political scenario, the scary fact is that truth is way spookier than fiction and that there are a couple of real-life politicians who are supposedly in the real world, as ruthless as Frank!
Here’s a shout out to all you House of Cards fanatics and conspiracy theorists, this one is a must read for you guys.
A list of eight regents and politicians whose political and personal characteristics could be the inspiration behind that of Frank Underwood.
1. Adolf Hitler
This was a given! We’re not saying that Frank Underwood killed a hundred thousand people at a go but Hitler was well documented as a manipulative, Machiavellian and ruthless leader who never let any obstacle stand in his dream to conquer the world.
Just like him, Underwood too has a way of getting things done and seems like there is no stopping him from getting what he really wants.
We’d say Hitler is a sure shot inspiration for Frank’s character.
2. Lyndon Johnson
Now, for those not in the know, Johnson was the 36th President of the United States, known for his domineering personality and the “Johnson treatment”. Similar to Frank, Johnson too was not at first elected but instead ascended to be president following the assassination of then President John F Kennedy. The ruthlessly pragmatic Johnson then went on to win a landslide re-election in 1964.
It is contemplated that the way Lyndon Johnson won the elections was similar to how Frank Underwood aims to get elected, which is under controversial circumstances.
3. Bill Clinton
President Clinton did not indulge in mind games to be elected as the president, but his relationship with wife Hillary is often compared with that of Frank and Claire Underwood and there is a lot of speculation that in this case, their real-life is the inspiration behind the reel-life marriage showcased in HOC.Of course, former President Clinton has never commented on the fact, but according to Kevin Spacey (who plays the role of Frank Underwood on the show), Clinton has said that House of Cards is a lot closer to facts than fiction and that it is a close depiction of what happens really happens in Washington!
4. Robert Moses
Robert Moses was a city planner who worked mainly in the New York metropolitan area. He was so unethically ruthless that he was ready to ruin every home that belonged to the low-income individuals only to expand highways. It’s said if you mix Robert’s work ethics and the great decision-making power of Johnson, you’d make an impeccably dangerous and powerful Frank Underwood.
5. Tom Delay
He’s the one who runs the House Republican Conference as a ruthless Majority Whip. In HOC, Frank is also a Southerner who uses the same position to launch himself into power. Both of them are also political conservatives. The only difference is that Tom Delay truly believes in his policies and party whereas Frank, on the other hand, is busy conspiring towards his ultimate goal.
6. Genghis Khan
Ghenghis Khan was someone who mastered the art of mercilessness. He was one of the most brutal, ruthless, and vicious rulers of all times. He made his enemies surrender to him and those who refused were brutally slaughtered along with their family and friends. That’s how he created terror and was quite proud of his actions. Now doesn’t that sound familiar to all those who have been binge watching House Of Cards?
7. Queen Mary I
Mary was the first queen regnant of England. She is remembered for her restoration of Roman Catholicism after her half-brother’s short-lived Protestant reign. During her five-year reign, she had over 280 religious dissenters burned at the stake in the Marian persecutions. Mary was on a ruthless terror spree back then and that earned her the posthumous title, Bloody Mary(Wonder how a drink got that name!).
8. Ted Cruz
Cruz is one hell of a ruthlessly ambitious politician just like Frank Underwood. He is quite cunning, and why shouldn’t he be after all he’s a politician! Ted excels at being shamelessly devious in Washington and that should worry anyone who cares about the future of American politics.
Now that we’ve taken you through a quick comparison of these real-life regents and politicians, with Frank Underwood’s character, can you guess which of these characters this amazing reel life character is most etched on?
